DJ News Magazine

Marcie Joy

Marcie, it’s a great pleasure to have you in our magazine and I know that Magik himself will be glad because he likes your work and talks a lot about you. Your career is really important for us. So…

DJ News Mag : What was it that really made you decide you wanted to become a vocalist/singer?
Marcie : Thank you for taking time to Interview me! Magik is a very talented DJ and Producer, and I am excited that he has founded Deejay News Magazine! I have always wanted to be a Singer. I began learning how far I could stretch my own voice by singing other people's songs. Singing other people's music helped me discover my own vocal range, and eventually I was ready to write my own songs and to figure out what I want to say in my own way.

DJ News Mag : In a few words, how would you describe your music and especially your lyrics?
Marcie : When I write, I draw on many influences while trying to push personal boundaries. It can be frustrating, because while I like my voice, I realize I am always stuck with the same instrument!  Sometimes I wish I had a different voice so I could make a different sound. There are so many voices I love who I could never dream of sounding like.  But hopefully I can find fresh ways of using my talents, and find honest ways of telling stories and performing melodies.

DJ News Mag : With such huge support coming from names like Tiesto, Armin van Buuren himself, Dj Shah, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, and the list goes on and on.  Now that your career has approached a level that several other female vocalists would love to reach, how do you feel about it?
Marcie : I am very grateful for the support I've received from the big DJ's you have mentioned.  Let's not forget that some of that support is earned because I have been fortunate to collaborate with quite a few extremely talented producers.  When I am supported by a big DJ, the exposure is widespread, and it opens up doors for me to take on new projects, or share my side projects with a new audience.

DJ News Mag : You have serious longevity in the EDM industry, so what advice would you give to some of these young female vocalists out there that would love to follow your path becoming what you are at the moment?

Marcie : I have serious longevity because I have been working seriously hard for a very long time! Honestly, I don't feel I ever had a lucky break where an idea became popular without my having to sweat over it.  I often don't understand why one track becomes popular and another does not, so it's hard for me to figure out a blueprint for success.  My best advice is for any Artist to work hard, maintain your integrity, don't backstab, don't let anyone tell you that your talent is based on your looks, and remember that the craft comes before the politics.

DJ News Mag : Where do you find yourself now, after delivering some real big tunes?

Marcie : I'm still in the studio working on new material.  I'm trying to explore all aspects of my writing so that I don't feel I'm writing the same thing twice.   I go through dry spells where, while I still love to listen to music, I don't have much to say through music.  Then I go through intensely creative periods where I feel like the only way I know how to speak is through music.  I hope that my songwriting skill set is continually improving.  I don't want to become bored.  I am not the kind of person who sits back and waits for inspiration.  I go out looking for it.  I shouldn't become bored.  Music is full of possibility, and if I become bored it's because I am not pushing myself in the right direction.

That being said, I can't lie and say that the music industry is an easy one.  I've delivered some big tunes, but I rarely make any money for my songs.  It is difficult to work a full time day job to pay rent, have a meaningful personal life, and keep up my energy for Art.  That balance has always been a struggle, and I think it will continue to be one.

DJ News Mag : You have a great radio show which this one talks about lyrics; it’s called “Behind the Lyric”. How the idea has come?
Marcie : "Behind The Lyric" features Artists telling the stories behind their dance productions.  I've interviewed Jes Brieden, Nadia Ali, Jaren, Zara Taylor, Roger Shah, Ferry Corsten, Oakenfold, Matt Darey, and many more!  "Behind The Lyric" focuses on the craft of songwriting, and the personal elements that go into an artist’s work, as well as the impact of songs on listeners. It gets away from the 'hype' and image oriented elements of the scene. My show is meant to focus on the hearts and souls of the artist and listener.

DJ News Mag : Which is the best song you've sung so far?
Marcie : My favorite is 'Broken Wings', out on Armada.  The lyrics mean a great deal to me. I think Danilo Ercole did an amazing job bringing a delicate and emotional lyric to the dance floor while preserving the story I wanted to tell. The song is exactly what I hoped it would be.

I'd love to do new mixes of some of my older tunes. I think that many of my older releases have strong melodies and lyrics that could have a long lifespan, but perhaps the style of mix would need to change to keep up with the sounds that are currently popular or revolutionary in the scene. For example, maybe a trance release from 2005 would make a cool stripped down acoustic tune, or could be revived as a darker proggy mix for clubs now.

DJ News Mag : It seems that you finally will come to Europe this year! What can you tell us about this?
Marcie : I am thrilled to be performing at Luminosity before the Energy! I have heard amazing things about this event, and I am out of my mind with excitement!!!!  Dance music is not as big in the U.S. as it is in Europe, and I think I will feel more at home performing in Holland than I ever have performing in the states!

DJ News Mag : What's your favorite leisurely activity? Do you have any interests other than music? We would like to know it!
Marcie : This year I resolved to finally learn to cook.  My favorite food to make is soup! There are so many kinds and it's cozy in the cold weather. I love to relax with a good book.  My day job involves working with kids, so I spend a lot of time playing and being outdoors.  That keeps my mind open for creating.   I'm trying to stay off the internet more than I did in the past.  I worry about twittering my life away.

DJ News Mag : What would you like to share with your readers?
Marcie : Come check out my new webisode series!  I interviewed a GHOST for Halloween, and answered some questions sent in by fans.  Episodes are up on youtube :
